Postnatal Yoga for New Mothers & Recovery After Childbirth
After childbirth, your body needs time to recover. And so do you. With postnatal yoga at Yoga Home in Maastricht, you work towards your recovery in a calm, safe, and effective way—both physically and mentally.
This form of yoga is specially designed for women after pregnancy and helps you restore balance in body and mind.
What is postnatal yoga?
Postnatal yoga is a modified, gentle form of yoga, specifically focused on your needs in the period after pregnancy and childbirth. Your body has gone through many changes during pregnancy and birth. Postnatal yoga helps you reconnect with your body and support your recovery.
During the classes, you work on:
Safe recovery
-
Activating and strengthening the abdominal, back, and pelvic floor muscles
-
Reducing discomfort such as neck and back pain from carrying your baby
-
Restoring your energy levels
Relaxation and mental calm
In addition to physical exercises, we focus on:
-
Breathing techniques
-
Meditation
-
Deep relaxation (restorative yoga)
This helps reduce stress, tension, and fatigue.

Postnatal yoga means truly taking time for yourself, something you (as a new mother) may really need.
Yoga after pregnancy
After pregnancy, you may feel ready to start exercising again quickly, but your body needs time to recover.
With postnatal yoga at Yoga Home:
-
You gradually rebuild your strength step by step
-
You help prevent overexertion
-
You reconnect with your body
You can usually start postnatal yoga from around 6 to 8 weeks after giving birth (in consultation with your midwife or doctor), depending on how you feel and whether you still have any physical complaints.
It is generally recommended to wait at least 8 months before returning to regular yoga classes. Take your time and be gentle when resuming physical activity.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact us via the contact form.
Is Postnatal Yoga Right for You?
Postnatal yoga is suitable for you if you:
-
Have recently given birth (from 6–8 weeks postpartum)
-
Want to recover at a gentle and steady pace
-
Experience back, neck, or pelvic discomfort
-
Want to safely start moving again
-
Need time for yourself
Important: Before starting postnatal yoga, always check with your midwife or gynecologist during your 6-week check-up whether you are ready to carefully begin rebuilding your strength and fitness, both after a vaginal birth and a caesarean section.
If you would like to practice postnatal yoga but find it difficult because you need to care for your baby, Mama & Baby Yoga might be a good option for you. In these classes, you can bring your baby with you while still joining the postnatal yoga session.
